Chinook 34 sailboat on the Columbia River

Chinooks racing on the wind-swept Columbia River were logging 7 1/2 knots when this photo was taken.

If you are one of those who has dreamed of owning a swift, lovely, roomy sloop about 35 ft. overall, if you have thought that such a boat is financially out of your reach, you can now revise your opinion. Now, by ordering the sleek Chinook all fiberglass hull, by completing the interior, cockpit, deck, cabin and rigging the boat yourself, you can own the 34 ft. racing and cruising sloop of your dreams for approximately $7500. An equivalent boat would cost you approximately $20,000 on the open market.

Yacht Constructors was founded by five members of the Rose City Yacht Club, Portland, Oregon, who wanted a racing and cruising sloop approximately 35 ft. overall,

9-ft. beam and 4-ft. draft. They wanted a boat that would sleep four comfortably, have an enclosed head, large galley and large cockpit for day sailing. Not one of these men could afford a boat of these dimensions unless he built the boat himself.

From plans by naval architect Frederick Geiger of Philadelphia, the Chinook class fiberglass sloop was developed. A male mold was built. From this a female fiberglass mold, which is used to mold the hulls of the lovely Chinook fiberglass boats, was constructed. By pooling their resources and labor, each of the five obtained the “impossible” at a cost of approximately one-quarter the market price for an equivalent boat.

Close hauled Chinook 34 on port tack.Three of the original partners are now offering you the same opportunity to own the sailboat of your dreams, the phenomenally fast, comfortable Chinook. All you have to do is acquire the fiberglass hull and plans for completing the boat, and then finish the craft yourself.

Special skills? Anyone with determination and average amateur skill with tools can do the job. So, if you are willing to work a little bit to make your dreams come true, you can become the proud owner of a wonderful Chinook fiberglass sailboat.

These boats have been tested under all conditions: in the swift waters of the Columbia River, on cruises from Astoria to Port Angeles and back, ( 260 miles of turbulent North Pacific Ocean) and extensive cruising in Puget Sound. During the first year of racing competition Chinooks won twelve of fifteen possible trophies.

Close hauled on a port tack. The Chinook is making about 6 1/7 knots in a moderate breeze. In three years of racing, Chinooks have won first place in every handicap race entered in the Portland area and in most cases have finished second and third, as well. In the 1960 Nor-Poc Race placed second in Class!
